Questions Regarding Anonymous Marking

Anonymous Marking

Anonymous marking is a feature in TurnitinUK that allows instructors to grade papers without knowing the name of the papers’ authors. The feature was built by iParadigms from an outline requirements request from the UK user group.

How does it work?

To activate anonymous marking, an instructor enables anonymous marking in the assignment options (under “more options”). When students submit paper, the author’s name will be replaced by a button indicating that anonymous marking is enabled in the assignment inbox, Originality Report, paper view, and GradeMark view.

In addition, grades will not appear in the grade book and submissions will not appear in the instructor’s view of the student’s class portfolio (found by clicking on the student’s name in the student list). Student names will be revealed on the assignment’s post date.

What if I need to know who wrote a paper before the post date?

If an instructor needs to know the name of a paper’s author while anonymous marking is active on the assignment, he or she can click on the “Anonymous Marking Enabled” button in the assignment inbox or in any view of the paper. Clicking the button will open a dialog box which will require the instructor to enter an explanation as to why he or she would like to disable anonymous marking for the paper.

After the instructor enters an explanation and chooses to proceed, the name of the paper’s author will be revealed and the instructor’s explanation will be sent to the anonymous marking tracking list in the institution’s TurnitinUK administrator’s account.

What if I decide to mark anonymously after I’ve created an assignment?

The anonymous marking option can be changed up until the first paper is submitted to the assignment. After the first paper has been submitted the anonymous marking setting will be locked and cannot be altered.

What if I submit papers for my students?

Although instructors can submit work on behalf of students to assignments that have anonymous marking enabled, the approach is more effective if students submit their own work.

Can students see if anonymous marking has been used?

No. Although this feature was discussed for this release we concluded that it may cause more controversies than it would prevent.

Why are names revealed on the assignment post date and not the class end date?

The post date indicates the end of the mark release process and is the date when grades and marks are published to students and tutors within the VLE. We therefore felt that this date was also the most intuitive for revealing names within Turnitin. However we will monitor feedback from customers about the use of the feature in practice.

Will anonymous marking work with TurnitinUK through a VLE or CMS integration?

Yes. Anonymous marking has been designed to work with all of the TurnitinUK CMS and VLE integrations.
